Donation: An Overview

Contact Hours: 1.2 Continuing Education Hours
Suggested Audience: Nursing, Pastoral Care, Social Work, New Employee Orientations, Staff Education Days, Unit Inservices

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this offering the participant will have the ability to:

  • Describe the referral process within their state with regards to donation.
  • Discuss legislation and regulations impacting donation within his/her state.
  • Identify the two types (organ/tissue) of donation events.
  • Verbalize the proper way in which the offer of donation should be handled and informed consent obtained.
  • List three common family and professional concerns/questions regarding the donation process.
  • List three types of surgical applications utilizing allograft tissue.

 

 

The Caring Question: Offering the Option of Donation

Suggested Audience: Nursing, Designated Requesters, Pastoral Care, Social Work, Education Days, Unit Inservices

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this offering the participant will have the ability to:

  • Identify donor criteria and signs of a potential donor event.
  • Summarize the referral process/guidelines for contacting the agency.
  • Identify the "Decoupling Period" as it relates to the donation process.
  • Identify the importance of the health care provider’s role in the donation process.
  • Verbalize methods to increase comfort level when working through the donation process.

 

 

 The Gift of a Lifetime

Suggested Audience: Hospice Care Providers

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this offering the participant have the ability to:

  • Identify criteria for and usage of tissues that a hospice patient may donate.
  • Identify common myths and facts associated with eye, organ and tissue donation.
  • Summarize referral process for potential donors
  • Describe hospice care provider’s role in the donation process.
  • Describe post-recovery services available to next-of-kin.
  • Describe the recovery process for eye and tissue donation.

 

 

Handling of Human Eye Tissue: Are You In Compliance?

Contact Hours (MNA, INA, NJSNA pending): 1.2 Continuing Education Hours
Suggested Audience: O.R. Staff, Surgicenter Staff, Blood Bank Staff, Surgeon Office Staff

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this offering the participant will have the ability to:

  • Summarize the general donation/screening/recovery/processing of eye/corneal tissue for transplant.
  • Identify the different types of corneal/eye tissue storage media/methods.
  • Outline the process for recipient/documentation tracking and storage of eye/corneal tissue for transplant.
  • List the steps in the process by which tissue is obtained for surgery.
  • Describe the five "R's" in relation to receipt and handling of tissue at his/her facility.
  • Explain the procedure for contacting the Eye-Bank with questions/problems.
  • List at least three surgical applications for use with allograft ocular tissue.
