Alan Sugar, M.D.
In addition to volunteering his time as a Medical Director for the Michigan Eye-Bank, Dr. Sugar is also on Midwest Eye-Banks’ Board of Directors. Dr. Sugar's areas of specialization include corneal transplantation, cataract and refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, Intacs, conductive keratoplasty), and management of diseases of the cornea and conjunctiva. He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1969; then, in 1974, he completed his residency in Ophthalmology at Washington University in St. Louis. He completed his fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at the University of Florida in 1975.


Qais Farjo, M.D.
Dr. Farjo is a graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School. He also completed his Ophthalmology Residency and a Fellowship in Corneal and Refractive Surgery at University of Michigan, where he also spent five years as an assistant professor. He is currently an assistant professor at the University of Toledo/ Medical University of Ohio. Dr. Farjo performs a variety of surgeries to reduce his patience dependence on glasses (LASIK, LASEK, CK and Intacs), as well as routine and complex cataract surgery and lens implant surgery, but he specializes in the repair of traumatized eyes.


Mark L. McDermott, M.D., M.B.A.
Dr. McDermott is a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine Kresge Eye Institute. He went to medical school at the University of Wisconsin, where he also completed his Ophthalmology Residency. He did his corneal fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and has an M.B.A. from University of Michigan. Dr. McDermott’s clinical interests include complex cataract extraction and corneal transplantation.


Shahzad I. Mian, M.D.
In addition to volunteering his time as a Medical Director for the Michigan Eye-Bank, Dr. Mian also serves on Midwest Eye-Banks’ Board of Directors. Dr. Mian's ophthalmological specialties include corneal transplantation, cataract and refractive surgery (LASIK, IntraLASIK, LASEK, PRK, CK), treatment of diseases and infections of the cornea, amniotic membrane grafts and limbal stem cell transplantation. His research interests include clinical studies in refractive surgery techniques and outcomes, corneal infections and dry eye disease. A 1996 graduate of Emory University, Dr. Mian completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Wills Eye Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University, in 2000. He completed a fellowship in Cornea and Refractive Surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard University, in 2002.


Douglas Shearer, M.D.
Dr. Shearer is an ophthalmologist at U.P. Eye Specialists in Marquette. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School, after which he was an intern at the Naval Regional Medical Center in San Diego. He did his residency at Naval Hospital in Oakland, California and completed a fellowship in Cornea and External Ocular Disease at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.


H. Kaz Soong, M.D.
Dr. Soong is a graduate of the Columbia University Medical School and did his residency in ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins University. He completed a fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at Harvard University. Dr. Soong also has a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Cornell University. He is currently a Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan. His specialty interests include corneal and conjunctival diseases, high-risk cornea transplants, posterior (deep) lamellar keratoplasty, LASIK, PRK and refractive surgery.
